Fall Lash Shedding

FALL LASH SHEDDING: HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR EYELASH EXTENSIONS

October is officially here and fall is in the air! But what does this mean for the new season? Fall lash shedding. Today, we are sharing why this happens and what to expect as the season changes.

WHAT IS LASH SHEDDING?

Even though they completely replenish and regrow new lashes every 60–90 days, our lashes fall out in cycles. But don’t worry, this IS a healthy part of our hair-growth routine. On average, we lose up to 20% of our natural lashes every two weeks and, depending on our individual hair-growth, we can shed between 1 and 5 natural eyelashes per day.

FALL LASH SHEDDING: WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?

You know how some animals shed their winter coats? Trees lose their leaves ... Well, it’s mostly the same for us and lash shedding! If you notice your lashes dropping faster or earlier than they normally would, the best thing you can do is give us a quick text. Even a quick touch up makes such a difference for your lashes, and your own peace of mind!

Why does this happen and why this time of year? As fall approaches and the seasons and temperatures begin to change, so does the humidity. This change is what can alter our lash growth cycle and can be the reason we notice a few fallen lashes here and there.

During this time, our bodies are increasing oil production to keep not only our hair, but also our skin from getting dehydrated. Just like it’s not uncommon for us to notice additional shedding with the hair on our head this time of year, it’s the same with our lashes.

HOW DOES LASH SHEDDING AFFECT EYELASH EXTENSIONS?

It’s important to know that when you have a natural eyelash that sheds, your extension will go with it. For all of us, each individual eyelash is programmed to reach a certain length, fall out, then regrow, taking the extension along for the ride.

But, there’s good news! As long as you keep up with your lash refill appointments every 2–3 weeks (like the good lash guest we know you are…wink, wink), your lash line will stay full and gorgeous!

Coordinating your fills at the right time is usually the best solution to the autumn shed, as regular upkeep and care is really is your lashes’ best friend. This is our favourite tip for new and regular clients around this season–making sure you come in during the time period that works best for you and your own natural lashes is the single easiest way to maintain your extensions. Lash fills are usually required every two to three weeks, depending on your natural shedding cycle–in a perfect world we would all retain our lashes for a month at a time, but we are still waiting for the lash gods to bless us with the technology! As a rule, at least 30% of lash extensions should still be intact to allow for fill time, so if you do notice that your lashes are looking especially sparse, it’s time to take action.
